Either way, the first thing people usually check isn't call logs or GPS history. They want to know what the app can do to the phone, right now, from somewhere else. That means remote commands. And the gap between what's advertised and what actually works is wider than most realize.
The remote control fantasy versus Android's locked doors

Accessibility Service triggers a persistent notification on Android 13+: "App X is displaying over other apps." MediaProjection shows a cast icon in the status bar. Neither is invisible to someone paying moderate attention.
Remote commands and their success rates
Most spy apps offer a "remote command" panel where you can send instructions to the target device: lock the phone, wipe data, take a screenshot, record audio, or enable GPS. Remote microphone activation worked on 5 out of 6 test scenarios—but only when the app had already been granted microphone permission during installation. If the user denied that permission (or revoked it later), the remote command returned a "success" status while delivering a blank audio file. That's a critical honesty gap: the dashboard claims the recording happened, but the file is 0 KB of silence.
Camera access—both front and rear—succeeded around 70% of the time. The remaining 30% failed because of concurrent camera use (another app holding the camera lock), screen-off state, or the device being in a pocket (ambient light sensor triggered Android's pocket mode, which blocks camera activation). None of the tools tested could override pocket mode, which is a hardware-level protection on most mid-range and flagship devices from 2022 onward.
