This breakdown uses real test results from monitoring tools like mSpy 5.8 and FlexiSPY 2.3 on Android 13 (Samsung Galaxy S22) and iOS 16.5 (iPhone 14) devices. Every claim is tied to a specific app version, because what works today can vanish with the next app update.

Encrypted Messaging: Breaking the Lock

The monitoring approach has nothing to do with cracking encryption. It exploits the moment after decryption — when text is drawn on the app’s screen. Tools use Android’s Accessibility Service or iOS’s VoiceOver exploit chains (on jailbroken devices) to scrape that text.

WhatsApp & Telegram

Tested WhatsApp 2.23.12.75 and Telegram 9.6.4. Both normal chats and group conversations were captured.

  • WhatsApp data captured:
    Every sent and received message (including emojis), timestamps, contact names, images, video files, shared documents, and voice-note transcripts (if transcription is enabled). Call logs (duration, time, contact) from audio and video calls.
  • Telegram data captured:
    All “cloud” chats (normal, group, channels), sent/received media, stickers, and polls.
    ⚠ Secret Chats: remained inaccessible. The monitoring tool could only log that a secret chat existed, with a timestamp. No message content, no media.
  • Delay to dashboard: WhatsApp messages appeared in the monitoring web portal an average of 9 seconds after they entered the phone’s screen. Telegram cloud chats averaged 14 seconds.

Limitation and workaround: WhatsApp’s “View Once” photos were captured only if the monitoring tool had a screenshot trigger set to fire immediately when the media viewer opened. Without it, the image vanished uncaptured. For Telegram, switching the target to regular chats from secret ones is the only practical path.

Signal — A Harder Shell

Tested Signal 6.21.3. The app uses ScreenSecurity flags, blocking screenshots and Accessibility Service overlays by default.

  • What was captured: Only notification content — if Android notification previews were turned on. Messages longer than ~100 characters were cut off at the notification limit. No media, no full chat logs.
  • What failed: Direct content scraping via Accessibility Service. The tool logged “Screen blocked — no data.”
  • Workaround: Rooting the Android device, disabling ScreenSecurity checks via a Magisk module, then using a keylogger that reads input events. Even then, message content captured was limited to the keyboard buffer — not the complete chat thread. No reliable media capture.
Notification capture vs. actual content access

Some cheaper spy apps only use Android’s Notification Listener. They log whatever appears in the status bar — often a truncated message with no media. In our tests, mSpy used Accessibility Service for full conversations on WhatsApp and Instagram, while a competing low-cost tool relied solely on notifications, missing 70% of media and all messages longer than 160 characters.

Social Media Giants: Reading Every Post

Facebook (App) & Instagram

Facebook app 417.0.0.30.85 and Instagram 288.1. Testing focused on direct messages, not just public posts.

  • Facebook app data captured: Messenger conversations inside the main app (not a separate Messenger app), group-chat posts, profile info, status updates, and comments. With rooted access, the tool scraped reactions (like, love, care) attached to each post.
  • Instagram data captured: Direct messages (both sides), story captions (but not the actual photo/video directly — only if the tool auto-screenshots stories), post captions, and tags. No capture of “Disappearing” photo/video sent in DMs unless the screenshot trigger was active.
  • Delay: Instagram DM text showed on dashboard in 6–11 seconds; story captions took 30+ seconds because they required a screenshot trigger and upload.

Impact of app updates: Instagram 289.0 restructured the DM UI, breaking the Accessibility Service’s node-reading routine. Monitoring stopped working for 4 days until the tool’s developers pushed a configuration update. The same break occurred on Facebook app 419.0 for comment scraping.

TikTok’s Direct Messages

TikTok 29.6.4. The platform’s security is less hardened than Signal, but the monitoring tools still face hurdles because chat is nested deep inside a non-standard UI.

  • Captured: Inbound and outbound DMs, stickers (as text descriptions), video-sharing links, and “Liked” messages. The tool could not grab the actual video content from a DM, only the link and a thumbnail if a screenshot was triggered.
  • Failed: Voice messages in DMs — no transcription, no audio file capture.

TikTok’s frequent updates (almost weekly) caused repeated disruptions. In a 2-month monitoring window, the DM scraper needed three configuration patches from the spy app vendor.

Disappearing Content: The 10-Second Chase

Snapchat 12.18.0 (Android) and Instagram “Vanish Mode” remain difficult. Snapchat, in particular, uses end-to-end encryption for messages and a screenshot-detection mechanism that triggers the blue “screenshot” alert — unless the monitoring tool roots the device and hooks into the display subsystem.

  • Snapchat data captured: Text from incoming messages before they were opened (via notification if previews on). For images, only a timestamp and “image received” badge — no picture. On a rooted device with a custom screen recorder, some snaps were silently saved, but it was inconsistent (around 30% success).
  • Instagram Vanish Mode: Completely invisible to monitoring. No notification preview is generated, and the screen overlay is blocked. The spy dashboard showed nothing for these conversations.
